Package and finish

GE Opal Ultra side tank: compare the exact finishes

The GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra family makes one real counter decision easy to miss: the model suffix can change the package, not just the color. The XPIO13 group is the side-tank version; XPIO23SWSS is the stainless version without the supplied tank. Within XPIO13, GE has exact pages for stainless XPIO13SWSS, sandstone XPIO13SWSO, white XPIO13SWOW and black XPIO13SWBB. The latter three pages carry the same side-tank and scale-inhibiting-filter title, list the same configuration dimensions, and link the same manual. Their exact page images show finish differences, but the manufacturer does not identify whether the images are studio photographs, renders or composites.

Choose by package first, then by finish

The XPIO13 side-tank review is the functional assessment for this earlier side-tank family. GE's three sibling pages explicitly identify XPIO13SWSO as Sandstone, XPIO13SWOW as White and XPIO13SWBB as Black through their exact image names and product-page model numbers. The common product title and shared linked manual support treating them as finish variants rather than inventing different nugget performance or collection capacities for each color. Before considering an older, resale or remaining-stock unit, match the full suffix on the appliance and check that the tank, tubing, cap and base are present.

Give the reservoir room, not only the machine

GE lists the XPIO13 side-tank configuration at 13.43 inches wide, 17.5 inches deep and 16.5 inches high. These are the product-page dimensions, not a promise that it fits inside an equally tight opening. The linked Ultra manual asks for side and rear ventilation space and describes the tube route, drain access, lid and tank handling. A 13.5-inch maximum body-width response is only a preliminary fit; a hard 13-inch limit fails before allowing working clearance. Measure the counter and the room needed to lift and wash the reservoir.

The tank is not a plumbed inlet or frozen-storage drawer. It supplies water between manual refills. GE's linked manual directs owners to hand-wash the reservoir, cap and valve, and warns not to put the tank in a dishwasher. It describes draining the base and connecting a drain tube to the tank; the unit and reservoir need to remain level, and the tube must lie flat enough for water to flow. Cleaning access and the ability to get the unit to a sink are part of the counter plan.

Don't confuse daily ice with stored ice

The side tank reduces the refill step; it does not enlarge the collection basket or freeze a reserve. GE's earlier XPIO13SWSS specification gives a three-pound bin and output claims of up to 38 pounds per day at 70°F air/60°F water and 32 pounds per day at 90°F air/70°F water. Those are manufacturer claims under different paired conditions, not our measurements. A full bin still needs emptying; collected ice is not a substitute for a freezer. A tankless XPIO23SWSS listing is narrower at 10.5 inches, but it changes the water package rather than the nugget texture. Do not treat a separately purchased tank as included in an XPIO23 box unless the exact seller listing confirms it.

Availability changes the recommendation

GE currently says each of these exact XPIO13 pages is no longer being manufactured and temporarily/out of stock online. They remain useful earlier-model comparisons, not default current-production suggestions. If you are evaluating one used or remaining-stock appliance, verify its condition, exact suffix, drain and tank parts, support options and current seller terms. If you need current availability more than a particular GE finish or app-connected setup, compare presently sold nugget machines as a separate choice rather than assuming an older color variant is still a current recommendation. The exact XPIO13SWSS page is the source for the cited production and basket specification, while the tankless dimensions refer to the exact XPIO23SWSS page. The linked GE manual and the exact SWSO, SWOW and SWBB product pages document the claims here; no price or stock prediction is represented.
