The main tradeoff

No longer manufactured; manual refilling and regular descaling/sanitizing remain.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I compare an earlier nugget machine below 11 inches wide?

Yes. The no-side-tank body is listed at 10.5 inches wide, before ventilation clearance.

Does this exact package include the standard side tank?

No. That supplied arrangement is the separate XPIO13SWSS configuration.

Is at least 32 lb/day stated for 90°F air and 70°F water?

Yes, that is GE’s warmer-condition figure; it is a manufacturer specification rather than our measurement.

An earlier Opal Ultra without the supplied side tank

The GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra XPIO23SWSS is the stainless nugget-ice configuration without the standard side tank supplied on XPIO13SWSS. Its manufacturer page identifies it as no longer being manufactured. It is included for shoppers who explicitly want an earlier-model comparison, with no claim of current-production status or a particular seller’s availability.

The practical reason to compare this configuration is its narrower body and simpler included water arrangement. It still collects nugget ice in a documented three-pound bin. Omitting the side tank changes refilling and space; it does not change the ice into bullet shapes or create a larger frozen reserve.

Read the output together with the test temperatures

The maker gives up to 38 pounds per day at 70°F air and 60°F water, and 32 pounds per day at 90°F air and 70°F water under the cited DOE conditions. A buyer expecting at least 35 pounds in the warmer stated conditions should not be matched on the 38-pound headline. The two figures belong to separate temperature arrangements.

These are manufacturer production statements, not our measured kitchen output. They also require space for continuing batches. When the bin fills, the machine cannot keep adding the entire advertised daily weight on top of it. Remove ice and maintain the water supply if continued production is the goal.

Refilling is the central tradeoff

Without the supplied side tank, you refill the documented internal reservoir arrangement. This may be perfectly reasonable for a person who uses a few drinks’ worth of ice at a time and values the narrower package. A household collecting ice repeatedly through the day may prefer the tank-equipped configuration or another documented reservoir arrangement.

Do not describe optional tank compatibility as an included accessory. If you intend to add one, confirm the exact compatible tank and total operating space separately. A photograph showing a tank on a related Opal package is not proof that it comes with XPIO23SWSS.

The body still needs ventilation and cleaning access

GE lists 10.5 inches of width, 17.5 of depth and 16.5 of height for this configuration, with four-inch air clearances at the sides and back. Depth and rear access therefore matter even when the width looks convenient. Leave room to pull the bin forward, reach the drain tubes and handle water without moving the appliance while full.

The collection bin is not a freezer. Meltwater returns to later production, which suits an on-demand routine but not indefinite storage. If a later gathering needs a reserve of nugget ice, plan suitable separate freezer storage and the handling it requires. A daily output number cannot answer how much ready ice waits in the drawer.

Match maintenance to the actual control panel

The linked manufacturer manual separates descaling, sanitizing and rinsing, and provides different instructions for the documented three- and four-button arrangements. Follow the exact panel and supplied edition. A scale-inhibiting filter can be part of the water arrangement, but does not remove the need for maintenance or correct rinsing.

The removable bin, drip tray and air-filter area have separate care tasks. Drain and dry the appliance as instructed before storage. Choose XPIO23SWSS for an explicit earlier Ultra comparison where narrow body width and no supplied side tank match the intended routine. Choose XPIO13SWSS when the standard tank is useful enough to justify its extra width and parts. This assessment does not invent taste, noise or durability tests and does not turn a clearance label into a price recommendation.

The exact model label also helps separate this Ultra edition from earlier Opal 1.0 and ordinary 2.0 products. Their capacities, tanks and maintenance controls should be checked independently.
