Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does this exact model pair nugget ice with a supplied one-gallon XL side tank?
Yes. Its exact GE product page identifies a nugget maker with a one-gallon XL side tank; the tank is a water supply, not additional ice storage.
Explore this need in the finder →Does its maker-stated cool-condition plan reach 38 lb per day?
Yes, as a GE claim at 70°F ambient air and 60°F water—not as a measured guarantee in warmer conditions.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the warm 90°F/70°F plan meet a 32 lb-per-day requirement?
No. GE’s exact product page gives 30.9 lb/day for the DOE warm condition; a 32 lb threshold is not supported.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the exact XPIOX3 package supply a direct water-line connection?
The exact page and linked manual document the manual-fill reservoir and side tank, not a direct water-line connection; unknown hookups do not satisfy an essential requirement.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a three-pound collection-bin minimum documented?
Yes. GE lists a three-pound drawer; this is one-time collection, not frozen storage or daily output.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I require a Filter-status button to track a compatible filter?
Not on the exact SCSS record. Its exact front-panel image shows Clean, Light and Power; the manual says the Filter control exists only on certain models. Treat tracking as unknown, not included.
Explore this need in the finder →The one-gallon tank is the meaningful package choice
The GE Profile Opal 2.0 XPIOX3SCSS is the stainless-steel, nugget-ice version that ships with GE's one-gallon XL side tank. It makes sense for a drink station that uses nugget ice often enough that topping up the machine's water reservoir would become a chore. The side tank is a separate water supply, not a bigger ice bin: GE lists the pull-out ice bin at three pounds. Melted ice returns to the water reservoir, but the collected nuggets are not held frozen for a later day.
GE's exact product page calls this a one-gallon side-tank package and lists a 13.43-inch-wide, 17.5-inch-deep, 16.5-inch-high body. The linked XPIOX3-series manual describes the tank on either the left or right, but it must remain on the same counter level as the maker; do not elevate the tank. Keep in mind that lifting a full tank is a separate part of the refill routine. If you want less setup, the XPIO23 family is the tankless alternative; XPIO13 uses a smaller 0.75-gallon side-tank package. Verify the exact suffix, because “Opal 2.0” alone does not identify which water arrangement is in the box.
Read the daily figure with its temperature pair
GE lists up to 38 pounds a day at 70°F room air and 60°F water, and its current exact-model page gives 30.9 pounds a day at 90°F air and 70°F water under the DOE condition. Those are the manufacturer's stated rates, not measurements made for this review. Use the lower warm-condition number if that is closer to your kitchen; actual output varies with conditions. A one-gallon tank may reduce refill interruptions during higher demand, but it does not change the room and water assumptions behind the production claim.
The three-pound bin is a different limit. A 38-pound daily claim does not mean the drawer can hold a day's worth of ice at once. It is a temporary collection point: once the bin fills, empty it so production can continue, and move any batch you want to keep to a freezer. If you need a standing frozen reserve without transferring ice, this recirculating countertop arrangement is the wrong kind of storage.
Measure a ventilated working spot
The body is wider than a 13-inch opening, before air space is considered. GE's manual asks for at least four inches at both sides and behind the unit, recommends a flat level indoor surface, and gives a 55°F to 90°F operating environment. Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat sources such as a range. The side tank also occupies counter space and needs room to lift out and refill. A fitted counter gap, an outdoor bar or a warm corner beside an oven is not a sensible installation plan.
The manual recommends two people for moving and setting up the appliance. It shows two drain tubes at the back and explains how to route them to a sink or vessel before draining. That matters when cleaning, leaving the machine unused or relocating it: plan access behind the unit rather than sealing it against a wall. The side tank, cap, valve and base well are hand-wash-only; GE specifically says not to put the tank in a dishwasher.
Connected control does not remove hands-on care
The exact page lists built-in Wi-Fi and SmartHQ, with status information and scheduling. That can help you arrange a fresh batch before a gathering, but the app cannot add water or empty a full bin. The XPIOX3SCSS product image shows a Clean, Light and Power control row. GE says compatible taste-and-odor and scale-inhibiting filters are available, but the sources do not establish that a filter is included in every exact-model sales package or confirm a filter-status button for this model. Treat the accessory and the front-panel tracking control as unconfirmed unless the actual box and model-specific instructions say otherwise.
Cleaning still means following the water-path routine, not just touching a control. The XPIOX3 manual distinguishes removing mineral scale from sanitizing and rinsing, calls for more frequent attention with hard water, and describes cleaning the removable bin and drip tray. A Clean command can run a prescribed cycle, but accessible parts, draining and tank washing remain owner tasks. The manual also gives a two-person handling caution and says to unplug before hand cleaning.
Who should choose it—and what remains uncertain
Choose this exact earlier model if you want nugget texture, a supplied one-gallon refill tank, a three-pound collection drawer and app scheduling, and you have the counter depth and clearance to use them. If you need a direct water-line hookup, do not assume the side tank provides one: the exact product page and manual describe manual filling, not a plumbing connection. Likewise, a strict 13-inch-width limit, a 32-pound minimum at the warm DOE condition or a powered freezer function rules it out.
GE's sales page now marks XPIOX3SCSS out of stock and no longer manufactured, so this is an earlier-model assessment rather than a promise of current stock. Owner Center dates it from November 2021 through April 2026. The exact page and linked manual also disagree on electrical current and net weight, so those figures are intentionally not used here for circuit or lifting plans. Check the rating label and included contents on any actual unit. The black-stainless XPIOX3BCBT is a separately listed finish variant with the same published package dimensions and central capacities; the Moonstone Blue XPIOX3SYMO has a different filter-status control shown in its exact image, so it has its own review rather than being collapsed into a color-only variant.
